Small Budget films hit Nandi jackpot
Small-budget movies took home more than half the honours at the Nandi Film awards this year.
Gamyam, starring Sharwanand and Allari Naresh, bagged not only the Best Film award, the director Radha Krishna took home the award for Best Director as well. Even lyricist Sirivennela Seetharama Sastri got the Best Lyricist award and Allari Naresh secured Best Supporting Actor award for the same film.
Another small budget flick, Vinayakudu, starring Krishnudu, bagged the Second Best Film Nandi and its director Sai Kiran Adavi won the Best Debutant Director award.
Among actresses, Swati was declared the Best Actress for her role in Asta Chamma, a low-budget movie again. Actor Ravi Teja was declared the Best Actor for his role in Neninthe.
Meanwhile, Shankar Mahadevan got the Best Male Playback singer and Geetha Madhuri, the Best Female Playback singer. Actor Bramhanandam bagged the Nandi for Best Comedian.
“This is a lesson for big-budget commercial movies. This time, sensible movies won the awards. It is not about budget, but the story, the technical brilliance and the filmmaking,” said P. Sarath Kumar, the censor board member who won the best Film Critic award.
However, one big budget movie, Arundhati, which went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters in the industry, made a mark by winning 10 awards for its technical excellence.
Sonu Sood, who plays a negative role in the movie, won the Best Villain award and Anushkha Shetty, who played the lead role, won the Special jury award.
Interestingly, none of the movies that were nominated for the Best Children’s Film, Best Director for Children’s Film, Best Documentary and Best Educational Film category got any award.
The jury said that the nominations were not worth the awards. Durgi was declared the second best children’s film.
